Towards a pan-European coastal flood awareness system: Skill of extreme sea-level forecasts from the Copernicus Marine Service

چکیده

European coasts are regularly exposed to severe storms that trigger extreme water-level conditions, leading coastal flooding and erosion. Early Warning Systems (EWS) important tools for the increased preparedness response against flood events, hence greatly reducing associated risks. With this objective, a proof-of-concept Coastal Flood Awareness System (ECFAS) was developed in framework of H2020 ECFAS project, which capitalizes on Copernicus products. In context, manuscript evaluates first time capability current Marine operational ocean models forecast water levels feed awareness applications at scale. A methodology is focus assessment storm-driven sea level events (EEs) from tide-gauge records. For detected EEs, event peak representation validated, impact lead evaluated. Results show satisfactory performance but general underprediction magnitudes 10% 18% surges across EEs. average, capable independently flagging 76% observed Forecasts limited up 4-day time, demonstrating suitability systems early warning applications. Finally, by separating surge tidal contributions extremes, potential sources prediction misfits discussed consequent recommendations evolution Service forecasting towards provided.

Quantifying the effect of sea level rise and flood defence – a point process perspective on coastal flood damage

In contrast to recent advances in projecting sea levels, estimations about the economic impact of sea level rise are vague. Nonetheless, they are of great importance for policy making with regard to adaptation and greenhouse-gas mitigation. Since the damage is mainly caused by extreme events, we propose a stochastic framework to estimate the monetary losses from coastal floods in a confined reg...

Towards Predicting Basin-Wide Invertebrate Organic Biomass and Production in Marine Sediments from a Coastal Sea

Detailed knowledge of environmental conditions is required to understand faunal production in coastal seas with topographic and hydrographic complexity. We test the hypothesis that organic biomass and production of subtidal sediment invertebrates throughout the Strait of Georgia, west coast of Canada, can be predicted by depth, substrate type and organic flux modified to reflect lability and ag...

Towards a Pan-European Information Space

When disasters occur, key factors for minimizing damages and loss of lives are access to necessary information and effective communication between emergency services. In cross-border disaster management, further challenges arise: language barriers, uneven know-how, organisational and technical differences in particular concerning communication and data or information exchange. To address those ...
